Research for regular season (Patriots camp)

What other handicappers are out attending training camps across the nation? Gameday Consultants provides the best analysis of any sport we cover. Here are some notes.
Since Practice 5 was a walk-through this morning, the afternoon session was the only one of the day with any significant action.
Overall, the tone of the day was more laid-back than the first two days of camp, which were dominated by hard hitting and a great deal of enthusiasm. That said, here are the highlights from Foxborough on this Saturday, Day 3 of training camp.
* Ten players were either not in pads or not in attendance at all. Wide receiver Matthew Slater, linebacker Derrick Burgess, guard Logan Mankins, o-lineman Nick Kaczur, and defensive lineman Ty Warren were not seen on the practice fields. Defensive back Bret Lockett, running back Thomas Clayton, defensive lineman Kyle Love, wide receiver Wes Welker, and defensive lineman Ron Brace were in attendance, wearing shorts and t-shirts and working with the team’s medical staff.
* On a positive note, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins was in full pads for the first time this summer. He’d been present for the previous five practices, but only took part in rehab-type activities.
* Receivers and corners faced off in a new variation on an old one-on-one drill. Instead of having a ball thrown to them, however, the idea was to battle for position within the first 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Rookie free agent Buddy Farnham struggled to get open against Devin McCourty and Terrence Johnson on a couple of occasions, while Brandon Tate kept getting shoved wide out of bounds. Toward the end of the drill, future Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss was witnessed giving pointers to some of the younger defenders.
* When the two positions faced off in the next period, quarterback Tom Brady was throwing to the receivers and there were a few memorable moments. On one play, cornerback Leigh Bodden provided tight coverage on Moss, following him step-for-step down the left numbers. Brady’s pass was underthrown, perhaps intentionally, so Moss pivoted 180 degrees counterclockwise to haul in the ball, making it look frustratingly easy, despite Bodden’s valiant effort to bat the ball down.
* A few plays later, Brandon Tate ran a deep out-route versus McCourty. He made the catch, tip-toed to stay in bounds, then turned and ran upfield as McCourty trailed. The defense came back on the next play, when Brady went deep to rookie Taylor Price, who had gotten open on a fly route down the right numbers. But safety Brandon Meriweather closed quickly and knocked the ball away at the goal line at the last second.
* Rookie corner Terrence Johnson pulled up lame in the aforementioned drill against the receivers. His injury appeared to be in the right leg region.
* In another new drill, three groups of offensive linemen and tight ends squared off against d-linemen and outside linebackers, with a running back carrying the ball behind them. The point of the drill, clearly, was to run block and defend against the run simultaneously. No notable plays emerged, but it was a new addition to the usual camp drills, so, it was worth mentioning.
* When the defense faced a scout-team offense, Farnham made a nice catch in traffic on a curl route. After being taken down with a spinning tackle, he got up and ran back to the huddle, but before he got there, safety Patrick Chung ran up and tapped Farnham on the helmet as a congratulatory gesture. The move was notable because on Friday, the two appeared to have some heated exchanges in that same period.
* Kickoff team was the focus of special teams work on Saturday afternoon. Meriweather, Brandon McGowan, Pierre Woods, Sam Aiken, Sergio Brown, Rob Ninkovich, Eric Alexander, James Sanders, Kyle Arrington, and Leigh Bodden got the bulk of the reps on the coverage unit.
* During 7-on-7 action … Moss caught a rare case of “alligator arms.” After getting open past Darius Butler, he was in perfect position to make a catch down the right sideline, but Chung was closing fast and Moss may have heard footsteps. He pulled his arms back and the ball hit his hands but fell to the ground. Later, Julian Edelman, in triple coverage, muscled the ball from safety Brandon McGowan as the two fell to the ground.
* When Team O faced Team D, rookie Jermaine Cunningham got some reps at right OLB with Tully Banta-Cain at left. There were also numerous personnel groupings and alternating of positions by several players along the d-line in that period.
* Kicker Stephen Gostkowski has been good on all his attempts except one on each day of camp so far. His lone miss on Saturday was a push, wide right, from about the 40-yard range on the far end of the field from the media tent.

Why Gameday Consultants?

Name me one other handicapper who turns a profit, treats their Clients with respect and looks as each Client as an investor.

I have come to find out in a short time that there are none.

They say the best in the business is a company out of Broward County, Florida. He is not the best, he is the most wealthy. He can throw money at a radio/tv/casino better than anyone I have ever seen, but when its time to make others wealthy, he sucks.

Here is a real story. His company calls a Client and because the person will not invest 10K after they have already invested 2K, they get a phone call with the pick and then hung up on. Is that the sign of someone who wants to build a relationship with his Clients? All this company is about is marketing to the next customer. If they happen to win, great. If they lose, oh well. Does this approach make him successful, yes. Does someone who is investing thousands of dollars deserve to be treated the same way they treat you at the Ritz, absolutely.

At Gameday Consultants, we started our company to be the opposite of his approach. Sure, we need to market to get our name out, but we will NEVER take even a $50 Client for granted. Our goal is to make each investor a life long partner.

Our method works, short, and long term. Take a look at our site and give us a call. We want to make you a partner in this profitable venture.

LeBum James Heads to Miami

Until yesterday when LeBum James made his journey down the mount to give us commoners an hour of his time, I actually liked him.

His legacy in my eyes is already being chiseled in stone. He needed a "dream team" to win a championship. Think of the people that mention him in the same sentence as Kobe Bryant. Kobe has 5 rings which two have come with good, not great teammates. Kobe took on the challenge and brought championships to LA. LeBum at a mere 26 years old, has given up on a team that had the best regular season record in the NBA, and lost to the eventual Eastern Conference Champs, the Boston Celtics.

How can a King give up on a team and a City that he built? The only conclusion I can come up with is that he is not as elite as his marketing team has made him out to be. All the greats in the league have given their city a championship by being a leader and making others around them better. LeBum made it known that he doesn't have the fortitude to fight through a challenge. He instead went the easy route and will let someone else be the leader (Dwayne Wade).

Good for the Heat, bad for the fans who thought they were seeing greatness in LeBum. Hey LeBum, why don't you learn from the greats like Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Pierce, David Robinson, Tim Duncan and see how they took good teams and won championships. As of Wednesday you had no enemies in the NBA. Thursday you made us watch you give Cleveland, NY, NJ, LA the finger. Now you can learn from a true leader Kevin Durant. While you were receiving the attention you need to feel important, Kevin was on the sidelines with his summer league team cheering them on. He tweeted his contract extension which keeps him in OKC trying to win and make others better. That is leadership.

So you are now a mere prince to King Wade. I hope you never get the ring you screwed so many to get.

Celtics Making Moves

According to the Boston Herald (h/t CelticsBlog.com), Jermaine O’Neal will be suiting up for the Boston Celtics this season and next.  The cost of the Center’s services will be the entire Mid-Level Exception.  Earlier reports noted that the Celtics were hoping to split up the Mid-Level on a couple of guys to fill out the roster.
We’ll have more analysis/thoughts on this later but for right now, it appears the Celtics have addressed, or at least begun to address, their vacancy in the middle.
Now if the C’s could only trade Rasheed Wallace for a wing player….

The Experts agree: Holland should beat Uruguay…

The Dutch team is on the verge of reaching their third World Cup finals in the history of Dutch football.
In 1974 and 1978, it went horribly wrong for us. West Germany was too strong in the 1974 finals (as you will all remember) and in 1978 it was the Argentinian goal post that robbed us from the trophee (although Argentina played very good in the extra 30 minutes!).
So, after 32 years we could be in the finals again. We will need to get past Uruguay first of course.
Most experts are convinced Bert van Marwijk shouldn’t change his strategy and use similar types for the two suspended players, Van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong.
Aron Winter: “Bert has a concept in his head with two players per position. Khalid Boulahrouz is the number 2 for the RB spot. He played their against Cameroon and should be playing there against Uruguay again. I hear people say that Van der Vaart should play instead of De Jong, but I don’t think so. You’d change the DNA of the team a tad and I’d go with De Zeeuw to avoid this. De Zeeuw and Van Bommel play well together and the Ajax-midfielder has had a number of excellent games for Oranje. Like the Romania game at the EC and the away game in and against Australia. I personally would shift Van Persie to the left and put Kuyt centrally. Dirk is in good shape and Robin seems to need some more time and space. That’s not really available centrally for him, particularly not against Uruguay.”

Bert: “I can’t help but laughing when ex-players start to give advice on the line up…”
Pi-Air van Hooijdonk is concerned about Van Persie as well. “I’m watching him closely and he sort of oozes this frustration. It’s like he is powerless in the center striker position and you can tell it’s eating away at him. I wouldn’t want him to lose himself. That line is pretty thin, you know.”
Arsene Wenger, Robin’s coach, doesn’t say it with as many words…. ” The Uruguay defense is the toughest at the World Cup. Argentina has the name and the Africans can be ruthless, but Uruguay is tough as nails and Robin will have a tough night against them. Uruguay without Suarez will play 100% counter football. Space will be at a premium and I’m not sure if Robin will be able to shine against them. Which is sad, because in theory, Robin could still be key for Oranje in their quest for gold. Holland will have to be very cautious.”

Bert: ” Holland has to be cautious?? Is that the best he can come up with??”
Sir Alex Ferguson tips a tournament win for Holland. “Holland hasn’t played top football yet and they always will at some stage. Players like Robben, Van Persie, Kuyt, Sneijder and Van Bommel on the pitch means trouble. I can see them score an early goal and then taking the game to Uruguay. If they get the swivel in the hips in this semis, they will be ready to peak in the finals.”
Leo Beenhakker – ex Real Madrid coach, ex Ajax coach, ex Oranje team manager and currently technical director of Feyenoord… “I like the way Bert works. If back 1 is suspended, you use back 2. It’s logical. Van der Wiel is suspended, you use Boulah. I’d use De Zeeuw instead of De Jong. Don’t make a fuss. Get out there and play the best football you have.”
Ex Ajax coach Henk ten Cate praises Bert van Marwijk. “To have 23 top players with top ego’s and wishes and ideas and to have them play as a team for 2 years is a terribly tough task and the hand of Bert is clearly visible. He did well and he shouldn’t change a thing.”

Kuyt: “I’m part of Team Edward and I will bite you in your neck now, you little man!”
Aad de Mos – ex Ajax, ex KV Mechelen, ex PSV went to the Jan-school of thought: “I hope Holland learned from the Brazil game. We need to play more offensively and more dominating.”
Diego Forlan has something to say as well: “Holland has phenomenal attackers and creative players and a solid defense. They are by far the favorites. But…we know how to play them. It will be a tough match but we’re ready for it.”
Ruud Gullit: “We were lucky this tournament, I hope the players recognize that. The own goal of Denmark, the mistake of the Japan goalie and the Julio Cesar mishap… The players should count their blessings and use that luck. We had it in 1988 too. The two England balls on the post. Marco scored one off-side goal. Kieft’s lucky goal… The Champ is always lucky. I am glad to see three offensive teams in the last four and I actually think Uruguay was pretty attractive to watch too. Football wins.”
Carlos Tevez has his own ideas. The Man City player is back in Argentina and he knows why. “We had good players but we didn’t know how to play like a team. Holland doesn’t have superstars, but they sure know how to play like a team and therefore they win games.”
Compliments all around and the highest form of compliments are concrete offers from other clubs. Barcelona seems to have a Plan B, in case Fabregas will stay at Arsenal. The Guardiola-led club wants to make an offer to Arjen Robben if Cesc doesn’t come.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been emptying his piggy-bank and wants to offer 30 million euros to Inter Milan to sign Wesley Sneijder for Manchester United.
Sebastian Abrue, the man who shot Uruguay into the semis: “Our coach showed us videos of Holland. We’ve never really seen them play. They’re good. We’ve discussed how to stop Robben. It all makes sense on paper but we will need to do on the field and that’s a tad tougher…”
The final training sessions make clear that De Zeeuw indeed will play for De Jong. He may not have played for some time, but “Ooijer and Boulah demonstrated that that shouldn’t be a problem”, according to Bert van Marwijk.

Clarence wears his Oranje kit when analyzing for the BBC

Clarence Seedorf: “Holland has the right mentality and approach to games and the players know that Holland is better than Uruguay. They can’t soften up this game and they can’t give anything away. It’s a strong team, mentally, as we’ve seen against Brazil. Team manager Bert van Marwijk gave this team an identity. They have grown enormously. I think Holland will with this World Cup.”
Ex team manager Foppe de Haan, last but not least:
“The focus needs to be on Uruguay, not on the finals. That risk is present. The goal might be winning the title but we need to win the semis first. Uruguay is probably not as strong without Suarez, but you never know what kind of forces will come to the surface with them. By the way, it’s ridiculous that Suarez is being demonized. What he did was a professional foul and he was penalized. A red card, a suspension and a penalty for Ghana. They missed it. That wasn’t Suarez fault. So, the rules of the game say: when a player touches the ball with his hand, the others get a penalty. That all happened. But for us, the Suarez suspension is great. The Ajax striker is so dangerous. But without Suarez, it’s not like Uruguay is weak. They have a strong team and they could go all the way as well. They didn’t get to this stage by luck. They grew into the tournament and Forlan is their leader. Oranje needs to focus on him. Not by Heitinga or Mathijsen, but by Van Bommel. Forlan is not a striker. Although he scores easily, he seldom shows himself in the box. He’s the creative midfielder and he needs to be played with dynamic play. With guts and confidence.

“Knock knock, who’s there. Gha. Gha who? GhaNA, hahahahaaaa…… Get it? Ghana. Go Now? Hahaha….I’ve had to laugh so loud I have to pee……”
Most people seem to think Sneijder is Oranje’s leader but I don’t agree. He’s been important and a great player, but to, Mark van Bommel is the real leader. He’s playing a tremendous tournament. Van Bommel needs to do it without De Jong and I think Van Marwijk will actually use Van Bommel’s opinion about who he wants next to him. Afellay is an option too, apart from De Zeeuw and Schaars, and Ibi is more adventurous. I’d prefer the PSV midfielder. He can put pressure on the Uruguay team and he has a tremendous shot from distance.”
