New England Patriots Win Super Bowl XLV

After what amounts to what seems like playoff type games the past two weeks, the Patriots win another big AFC game against the all powerful Colts. Coming off a huge victory in Pittsburgh the week prior, one would think these games were being played in January. Instead, the NFL has decided that if the Patriots are to win Super Bowl XLV, they will do it by beating the brass of the NFL not once but twice before reaching football's ultimate game.

Jets twice (maybe a third time in the playoffs), Pitt and Indy (most likely to see them again in the playoffs for a second time), Baltimore, Green Bay, Chicago, Vikings and Chargers. After a schedule like that, the battle tested Patriots may have the hardest schedule heading into the Super Bowl of any team in the NFL.

Bears v. Dolphins Keys to the Game

While Gameday preps for a big night in Miami for the Thursday night game between the Dolphins and Bears, there are some interesting questions to be answered.

With key injuries to the QB position for the Fins one would think you should favor the Bears, as Lee Corso would say "not so fast my friend". Tyler Thigpen, Miami's third string QB has the tools to pull out this key Thursday night game. The keys however are not on Tyler, they are on Dan Henning Miami's offensive coordinator. He needs to use a gameplan of three-step drops, play-action passes and lots of wildcat with Ronnie Brown in order to secure a home victory.

The key here is not to let Tyler hurt you, as well as not to let the Bears tee off on your new quarterback and have him make poor decisions. If the Dolphins can keep the Bears guessing and Thigpen can manage the game, the Dolphins can get another much needed W if they want to stay in the hunt of the wildcard spot.

As far as the Bears, they need to take advantage of Channing Crowder. What a bum! If the Bears can isolate him on Forte out of the backfield with screen passes, this could be the most effective way to beat a home team on short rest.

While we will enjoy watching this game live from SunLife Stadium tonight, you can enjoy it as well by taking Miami -1.5 tonight.

How about them Celtics!

Gameday was on hand in Boston for opening night against the Heat. All I could be reminded of was an old saying my dad would always remind me of. "Bryan, a good team will always beat an all-star team because there is only one ball".
While I believe that was the case last night at The Garden, I am not dumb enough to say this will be the case 20 games from now. Right now, the Heat are an all-star team who has not gelled as of yet. Give those phenominal players a few weeks of games and practices together, and you will see the team people expect last night against the Celtics.
Let's give the Celtics all the credit. They have a core group of guys that have been together for four years now. A top coach in the NBA as well as depth that goes on for days. I expect to see them in the playoffs with the Heat and hopefully (baring injuries) continuing where they left off last year.

Gameday Consultants is your one stop shop for sports year round. Because Nobody covers Gameday like Gameday!

Much more fun winning

In this business there are ups and downs. Last week we were down. Like we say though, this is a marathon not a sprint. Over the course of a month or longer, we will win money. One weekend should not and will not define us.

Needless to say, this week has been what we get paid to do... WIN. We are on fire and tonight should be no different.

Wins, Losses and Lessons

In what I would say was Gameday's worst week of the season, I figured I owe it to our investors to admit where we went wrong. We started the week off strong. We were hitting MLB Playoff games, Thursday and Friday night football and looking great going into the weekend games.

That is where the week turned to crap. We couldnt catch a break. 2 QB's go out with injuries in the first half of Saturday's games and needless to say we got crushed.

The highlight of the weekend was the 1 PM games in the NFL where we went 2-0 but even that was short lived. The Saints lost outright and the Chargers lost a lead late in the fourth to stick it to us. So one would say Sunday night must have got better. Nope. Alex Smith sticks it to us with 2 key interceptions and Frnak Gore puts the ball on the ground not once, but twice. Another loss.

So, that brings us to MNF. Everything is looking great with the Vikings +4.5. Three minutes left to play and Mr. Show me your package Favre decides to add to his interception total with a pick 6. Then with an opportunity to cover with a minute to go, he send another ill advised text, I mean pass to the opposite team to seal our fate.

This was easily the week from hell. Started off strong and couldnt finish. Lots of excuses and "what ifs" but a win is a win and a loss is a lesson.

The lesson we try to explain to our investors is that gambling on sports is a marathon not a sprint. We will make money in the long term just like the stock market but with a higher yield. Just like they say you cant play the market and watch on a daily basis, same goes for the commodity of sports. Overall Gameday wins. This weekend was an embarrassment but a lesson learned about why we preach what we preach.

Monday Night Football- NE v Miami

In a game where two divisional rival will be vying for second place, the story line (and the betting line) is steep with uncertainty. Here is what we know...

The Patriots defense is not playing well. In last weeks win, it took all 48 minutes to beat the lowly Jets at home. Even scoring 38 points wasn't enough to put a bad Bills team away early. The saddest part is that the Patriots offense is hitting on all cylinders. They almost score too quick. Look for the run game to be a huge part of the Patriots game plan on Monday night. If they can control the clock, then put up touchdowns, they should be able to outscore the Dolphins. However, if they have to settle for field goals in the red zone, this could land them in third place in the AFC East.

As for the Fins, the game will rest on the arm of Chad Henne. The Pats defense is solid up front against the run. Look for the Dolphins to exploit the Pats young DB's. If Henne can pick apart the D like every other QB has this year, look for a shootout in Miami tonight.

The line has moved from a pick to the Pats favored to now the Dolphins favored by one. Very much an uncertain gambling public on who will win. However, the total has been consistently edging upward to now a point total of 48. A divisional game with a lot on the line this early can really set the tone for the winner of this contest. Will it be a high scoring shootout? Will it be a running game and low scoring? Will turnovers be the key? College Football Best Bets

In a weekend where most people will be watching the marquee match ups such as Florida @ Alabama, Stanford @ Oregon, Oklahoma and Texas, Penn State @ Iowa we are looking at some of the less attractive games today that will not get as much attention by the Vegas books.

Gameday Consultants was all over the Utah State game last night and won that easily. How can we verify? We are registered at a third party site in Vegas that tracks our picks. Only our consensus picks are given every day. We do not give opinions on games for the sake of giving them. We have a staff of over ten athletes and handicappers that are intimately involved in each market where there is action.

Currently we are on ESPN radio in Washington D.C. with Coach John Thompson and former Redskin Doc Walker breaking down all the games each Friday. We are also on in Southwest Florida each Friday and Sunday an hour before Miami Dolphins football games.

We are the BEST at what we do. We do not pretend to be the best at marketing, accounting or construction but we do take our profession just as seriously. We want to make our Clients money of the course of time with sound picks and smart money management decisions.

Invest in Gameday Consultants and we make this pledge to you. You will win over the course of the season. Give us a call at 888.433.4994 or check out our site at Gameday Consultants, Inc for more information.

Wed Night Baseball

As the MLB season enters the final few games, we are seeing what we usually see...lots of AAA fill-ins. There are still some teams that need to win however. Gameday Consultants is still on top of baseball even while the other handicappers only focus on football. At GCI, we have the staff to cover all sports year round.

Tonight we have three games on tap in the Major League and we are certain that this will bring us into Thursday with a bigger bankroll than we had at the beginning of the week.

Monday Night Football

So after a weekend where Shawn Hill, Pats Defense and the 49ers in general screwed me, its time to get back on the winning side of things. Seattle was nice and the Yankees pulled out a tight one for a little momentum going into Monday night so here we go...

Monday night will not even be close. I am predicting a big win by Green Bay and here is why:
Green Bay has too many weapons. The Bears defense cannot stop the Packers WR's. You can't look to the Dallas game because Rodgers will not throw 3 picks, that is for sure. What you can expect is the Packers to have an even attack and exploit the Bears secondary.

For the Bears, linebacker Lance Briggs (ankle), tackle Chris Williams (hamstring) and safety Major Wright (hamstring) missed practice. Williams and Wright are not expected to play, but Lance Briggs is listed as probable tonight. Briggs led the Bears with 118 tackles last season.

Green Bay has one of the best passing attacks in the NFL behind the right arm of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who’s already thrown for 442 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Rodgers has plenty weapons at his disposal with three solid receivers options in Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley. Rodgers does a great job of spreading the ball around and he is aware he has to keep his playmakers happy by finding them when they get open.

“The biggest challenge is if there starts to be some dissension with those guys,” Rodgers said. “I just hope they would come to me first. We’ll meet that when we come to it, but I hope we don’t have to go through that.

“Obviously, they all want to make plays. I’m not going to change the way I play. I’m going to throw it to the guys who are open, and I’m going to go through my progressions. I hope they understand that.”

The Packers are 4-0 ATS in their last four games against the Bears and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games at Soldier Field.

The under is 8-2 in the Bears last 10 games as underdogs.

Chicago is just 7-18-2 ATS vs. teams with winning records.

The Packers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games against NFC North opponents.

GCI-Money Management System

Quit betting by units. Handicappers that give bets based off units are telling you how much confidence they have in their pick. Why would you gamble on something that wasn’t a best bet every time?
At GCI, money management is every bit as important as betting.  That is why Gameday Consultants advise our clients to invest 5 % of their bankroll (and no more) per wager.  Unlike most handicappers all of our bets are “Gameday Best Bets” giving members 5 star bets every time.
Let’s look at an example:
Starting bankroll: $1000
Betting unit: 5% ($50 per game)
We will assume that you are betting $50 on every game and at the end of the month you have made 120 plays. Your record on these plays is 72 wins and 48 losses for a very nice win percentage of 60%. Your bankroll will now have increased as follows:
Starting bankroll: $1,000
Wins: 72 x $45 = $3,240
Losses: 48 x $50= ($2,400)
Net win: $840
New bankroll: $1,840
You have increased your bankroll by almost double.  Not a bad month!

NFL Preseason- What to look for

As you look to wager on preseason, remember one thing: Its not who has more talent!

Most gamblers make this very mistake and it is so basic. A quality team wants to develop their roster that never sees all that much action, while others have to develop their first team to enhance cohesiveness. Gameday Consultants is the edge you need to make that educated guess into a probable decision. We take the guess work out of sports betting by using a team of ex athletes from every corner of the US to help us understand what each team is doing each week.

Dont rely on handicappers who sit in Vegas or elsewhere and guess. Let a team of professionals make your investment a profitable one.

Research for regular season (Patriots camp)

What other handicappers are out attending training camps across the nation? Gameday Consultants provides the best analysis of any sport we cover. Here are some notes.
Since Practice 5 was a walk-through this morning, the afternoon session was the only one of the day with any significant action.
Overall, the tone of the day was more laid-back than the first two days of camp, which were dominated by hard hitting and a great deal of enthusiasm. That said, here are the highlights from Foxborough on this Saturday, Day 3 of training camp.
* Ten players were either not in pads or not in attendance at all. Wide receiver Matthew Slater, linebacker Derrick Burgess, guard Logan Mankins, o-lineman Nick Kaczur, and defensive lineman Ty Warren were not seen on the practice fields. Defensive back Bret Lockett, running back Thomas Clayton, defensive lineman Kyle Love, wide receiver Wes Welker, and defensive lineman Ron Brace were in attendance, wearing shorts and t-shirts and working with the team’s medical staff.
* On a positive note, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins was in full pads for the first time this summer. He’d been present for the previous five practices, but only took part in rehab-type activities.
* Receivers and corners faced off in a new variation on an old one-on-one drill. Instead of having a ball thrown to them, however, the idea was to battle for position within the first 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Rookie free agent Buddy Farnham struggled to get open against Devin McCourty and Terrence Johnson on a couple of occasions, while Brandon Tate kept getting shoved wide out of bounds. Toward the end of the drill, future Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss was witnessed giving pointers to some of the younger defenders.
* When the two positions faced off in the next period, quarterback Tom Brady was throwing to the receivers and there were a few memorable moments. On one play, cornerback Leigh Bodden provided tight coverage on Moss, following him step-for-step down the left numbers. Brady’s pass was underthrown, perhaps intentionally, so Moss pivoted 180 degrees counterclockwise to haul in the ball, making it look frustratingly easy, despite Bodden’s valiant effort to bat the ball down.
* A few plays later, Brandon Tate ran a deep out-route versus McCourty. He made the catch, tip-toed to stay in bounds, then turned and ran upfield as McCourty trailed. The defense came back on the next play, when Brady went deep to rookie Taylor Price, who had gotten open on a fly route down the right numbers. But safety Brandon Meriweather closed quickly and knocked the ball away at the goal line at the last second.
* Rookie corner Terrence Johnson pulled up lame in the aforementioned drill against the receivers. His injury appeared to be in the right leg region.
* In another new drill, three groups of offensive linemen and tight ends squared off against d-linemen and outside linebackers, with a running back carrying the ball behind them. The point of the drill, clearly, was to run block and defend against the run simultaneously. No notable plays emerged, but it was a new addition to the usual camp drills, so, it was worth mentioning.
* When the defense faced a scout-team offense, Farnham made a nice catch in traffic on a curl route. After being taken down with a spinning tackle, he got up and ran back to the huddle, but before he got there, safety Patrick Chung ran up and tapped Farnham on the helmet as a congratulatory gesture. The move was notable because on Friday, the two appeared to have some heated exchanges in that same period.
* Kickoff team was the focus of special teams work on Saturday afternoon. Meriweather, Brandon McGowan, Pierre Woods, Sam Aiken, Sergio Brown, Rob Ninkovich, Eric Alexander, James Sanders, Kyle Arrington, and Leigh Bodden got the bulk of the reps on the coverage unit.
* During 7-on-7 action … Moss caught a rare case of “alligator arms.” After getting open past Darius Butler, he was in perfect position to make a catch down the right sideline, but Chung was closing fast and Moss may have heard footsteps. He pulled his arms back and the ball hit his hands but fell to the ground. Later, Julian Edelman, in triple coverage, muscled the ball from safety Brandon McGowan as the two fell to the ground.
* When Team O faced Team D, rookie Jermaine Cunningham got some reps at right OLB with Tully Banta-Cain at left. There were also numerous personnel groupings and alternating of positions by several players along the d-line in that period.
* Kicker Stephen Gostkowski has been good on all his attempts except one on each day of camp so far. His lone miss on Saturday was a push, wide right, from about the 40-yard range on the far end of the field from the media tent.

Why Gameday Consultants?

Name me one other handicapper who turns a profit, treats their Clients with respect and looks as each Client as an investor.

I have come to find out in a short time that there are none.

They say the best in the business is a company out of Broward County, Florida. He is not the best, he is the most wealthy. He can throw money at a radio/tv/casino better than anyone I have ever seen, but when its time to make others wealthy, he sucks.

Here is a real story. His company calls a Client and because the person will not invest 10K after they have already invested 2K, they get a phone call with the pick and then hung up on. Is that the sign of someone who wants to build a relationship with his Clients? All this company is about is marketing to the next customer. If they happen to win, great. If they lose, oh well. Does this approach make him successful, yes. Does someone who is investing thousands of dollars deserve to be treated the same way they treat you at the Ritz, absolutely.

At Gameday Consultants, we started our company to be the opposite of his approach. Sure, we need to market to get our name out, but we will NEVER take even a $50 Client for granted. Our goal is to make each investor a life long partner.

Our method works, short, and long term. Take a look at our site and give us a call. We want to make you a partner in this profitable venture.

LeBum James Heads to Miami

Until yesterday when LeBum James made his journey down the mount to give us commoners an hour of his time, I actually liked him.

His legacy in my eyes is already being chiseled in stone. He needed a "dream team" to win a championship. Think of the people that mention him in the same sentence as Kobe Bryant. Kobe has 5 rings which two have come with good, not great teammates. Kobe took on the challenge and brought championships to LA. LeBum at a mere 26 years old, has given up on a team that had the best regular season record in the NBA, and lost to the eventual Eastern Conference Champs, the Boston Celtics.

How can a King give up on a team and a City that he built? The only conclusion I can come up with is that he is not as elite as his marketing team has made him out to be. All the greats in the league have given their city a championship by being a leader and making others around them better. LeBum made it known that he doesn't have the fortitude to fight through a challenge. He instead went the easy route and will let someone else be the leader (Dwayne Wade).

Good for the Heat, bad for the fans who thought they were seeing greatness in LeBum. Hey LeBum, why don't you learn from the greats like Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Pierce, David Robinson, Tim Duncan and see how they took good teams and won championships. As of Wednesday you had no enemies in the NBA. Thursday you made us watch you give Cleveland, NY, NJ, LA the finger. Now you can learn from a true leader Kevin Durant. While you were receiving the attention you need to feel important, Kevin was on the sidelines with his summer league team cheering them on. He tweeted his contract extension which keeps him in OKC trying to win and make others better. That is leadership.

So you are now a mere prince to King Wade. I hope you never get the ring you screwed so many to get.

Celtics Making Moves

According to the Boston Herald (h/t CelticsBlog.com), Jermaine O’Neal will be suiting up for the Boston Celtics this season and next.  The cost of the Center’s services will be the entire Mid-Level Exception.  Earlier reports noted that the Celtics were hoping to split up the Mid-Level on a couple of guys to fill out the roster.
We’ll have more analysis/thoughts on this later but for right now, it appears the Celtics have addressed, or at least begun to address, their vacancy in the middle.
Now if the C’s could only trade Rasheed Wallace for a wing player….

The Experts agree: Holland should beat Uruguay…

The Dutch team is on the verge of reaching their third World Cup finals in the history of Dutch football.
In 1974 and 1978, it went horribly wrong for us. West Germany was too strong in the 1974 finals (as you will all remember) and in 1978 it was the Argentinian goal post that robbed us from the trophee (although Argentina played very good in the extra 30 minutes!).
So, after 32 years we could be in the finals again. We will need to get past Uruguay first of course.
Most experts are convinced Bert van Marwijk shouldn’t change his strategy and use similar types for the two suspended players, Van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong.
Aron Winter: “Bert has a concept in his head with two players per position. Khalid Boulahrouz is the number 2 for the RB spot. He played their against Cameroon and should be playing there against Uruguay again. I hear people say that Van der Vaart should play instead of De Jong, but I don’t think so. You’d change the DNA of the team a tad and I’d go with De Zeeuw to avoid this. De Zeeuw and Van Bommel play well together and the Ajax-midfielder has had a number of excellent games for Oranje. Like the Romania game at the EC and the away game in and against Australia. I personally would shift Van Persie to the left and put Kuyt centrally. Dirk is in good shape and Robin seems to need some more time and space. That’s not really available centrally for him, particularly not against Uruguay.”

Bert: “I can’t help but laughing when ex-players start to give advice on the line up…”
Pi-Air van Hooijdonk is concerned about Van Persie as well. “I’m watching him closely and he sort of oozes this frustration. It’s like he is powerless in the center striker position and you can tell it’s eating away at him. I wouldn’t want him to lose himself. That line is pretty thin, you know.”
Arsene Wenger, Robin’s coach, doesn’t say it with as many words…. ” The Uruguay defense is the toughest at the World Cup. Argentina has the name and the Africans can be ruthless, but Uruguay is tough as nails and Robin will have a tough night against them. Uruguay without Suarez will play 100% counter football. Space will be at a premium and I’m not sure if Robin will be able to shine against them. Which is sad, because in theory, Robin could still be key for Oranje in their quest for gold. Holland will have to be very cautious.”

Bert: ” Holland has to be cautious?? Is that the best he can come up with??”
Sir Alex Ferguson tips a tournament win for Holland. “Holland hasn’t played top football yet and they always will at some stage. Players like Robben, Van Persie, Kuyt, Sneijder and Van Bommel on the pitch means trouble. I can see them score an early goal and then taking the game to Uruguay. If they get the swivel in the hips in this semis, they will be ready to peak in the finals.”
Leo Beenhakker – ex Real Madrid coach, ex Ajax coach, ex Oranje team manager and currently technical director of Feyenoord… “I like the way Bert works. If back 1 is suspended, you use back 2. It’s logical. Van der Wiel is suspended, you use Boulah. I’d use De Zeeuw instead of De Jong. Don’t make a fuss. Get out there and play the best football you have.”
Ex Ajax coach Henk ten Cate praises Bert van Marwijk. “To have 23 top players with top ego’s and wishes and ideas and to have them play as a team for 2 years is a terribly tough task and the hand of Bert is clearly visible. He did well and he shouldn’t change a thing.”

Kuyt: “I’m part of Team Edward and I will bite you in your neck now, you little man!”
Aad de Mos – ex Ajax, ex KV Mechelen, ex PSV went to the Jan-school of thought: “I hope Holland learned from the Brazil game. We need to play more offensively and more dominating.”
Diego Forlan has something to say as well: “Holland has phenomenal attackers and creative players and a solid defense. They are by far the favorites. But…we know how to play them. It will be a tough match but we’re ready for it.”
Ruud Gullit: “We were lucky this tournament, I hope the players recognize that. The own goal of Denmark, the mistake of the Japan goalie and the Julio Cesar mishap… The players should count their blessings and use that luck. We had it in 1988 too. The two England balls on the post. Marco scored one off-side goal. Kieft’s lucky goal… The Champ is always lucky. I am glad to see three offensive teams in the last four and I actually think Uruguay was pretty attractive to watch too. Football wins.”
Carlos Tevez has his own ideas. The Man City player is back in Argentina and he knows why. “We had good players but we didn’t know how to play like a team. Holland doesn’t have superstars, but they sure know how to play like a team and therefore they win games.”
Compliments all around and the highest form of compliments are concrete offers from other clubs. Barcelona seems to have a Plan B, in case Fabregas will stay at Arsenal. The Guardiola-led club wants to make an offer to Arjen Robben if Cesc doesn’t come.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been emptying his piggy-bank and wants to offer 30 million euros to Inter Milan to sign Wesley Sneijder for Manchester United.
Sebastian Abrue, the man who shot Uruguay into the semis: “Our coach showed us videos of Holland. We’ve never really seen them play. They’re good. We’ve discussed how to stop Robben. It all makes sense on paper but we will need to do on the field and that’s a tad tougher…”
The final training sessions make clear that De Zeeuw indeed will play for De Jong. He may not have played for some time, but “Ooijer and Boulah demonstrated that that shouldn’t be a problem”, according to Bert van Marwijk.

Clarence wears his Oranje kit when analyzing for the BBC

Clarence Seedorf: “Holland has the right mentality and approach to games and the players know that Holland is better than Uruguay. They can’t soften up this game and they can’t give anything away. It’s a strong team, mentally, as we’ve seen against Brazil. Team manager Bert van Marwijk gave this team an identity. They have grown enormously. I think Holland will with this World Cup.”
Ex team manager Foppe de Haan, last but not least:
“The focus needs to be on Uruguay, not on the finals. That risk is present. The goal might be winning the title but we need to win the semis first. Uruguay is probably not as strong without Suarez, but you never know what kind of forces will come to the surface with them. By the way, it’s ridiculous that Suarez is being demonized. What he did was a professional foul and he was penalized. A red card, a suspension and a penalty for Ghana. They missed it. That wasn’t Suarez fault. So, the rules of the game say: when a player touches the ball with his hand, the others get a penalty. That all happened. But for us, the Suarez suspension is great. The Ajax striker is so dangerous. But without Suarez, it’s not like Uruguay is weak. They have a strong team and they could go all the way as well. They didn’t get to this stage by luck. They grew into the tournament and Forlan is their leader. Oranje needs to focus on him. Not by Heitinga or Mathijsen, but by Van Bommel. Forlan is not a striker. Although he scores easily, he seldom shows himself in the box. He’s the creative midfielder and he needs to be played with dynamic play. With guts and confidence.

“Knock knock, who’s there. Gha. Gha who? GhaNA, hahahahaaaa…… Get it? Ghana. Go Now? Hahaha….I’ve had to laugh so loud I have to pee……”
Most people seem to think Sneijder is Oranje’s leader but I don’t agree. He’s been important and a great player, but to, Mark van Bommel is the real leader. He’s playing a tremendous tournament. Van Bommel needs to do it without De Jong and I think Van Marwijk will actually use Van Bommel’s opinion about who he wants next to him. Afellay is an option too, apart from De Zeeuw and Schaars, and Ibi is more adventurous. I’d prefer the PSV midfielder. He can put pressure on the Uruguay team and he has a tremendous shot from distance.”

WHY ENGLAND LOSES By STEPHEN J. DUBNER

I spent the last two weeks in England, a country I love very much, in part because its national character is so full of quirks. One such quirk is its majestically complicated relationship with its national football team.

In its first match in this year’s World Cup, a 1-1 draw with the U.S., the English goal-keeper made a horrible mistake and was subsequently treated as if he were French-born, or worse (and was promptly benched). After a desultory 0-0 draw with Algeria, the English team was pronounced total rubbish. Though the weather last week was divine, a cloud of self-disgust hung over the nation. But then, after thrashing Slovenia 1-0 and thereby advancing to the knockout round, the English team was declared fit for the Cup title, ready to roll over Germany and any other unlucky nation that might get in its way.

But Germany thrashed England yesterday, 4-1. Yes, there was a disallowed English goal that was clearly valid, but it’s hard to argue England wouldn’t have been sent home nonetheless. So once again the nation mourns. It seems unfair to the point of disbelief that a country that invented a sport could now so badly trail the rest of the world. (The same can of course be said about many things in England, including tennis. Summertime is a particularly sour time to be an English sports fan, as Wimbledon also reminds him that the world takes what England makes.)

Moreover, the nation looks for explanations for this routine football failure. Many explanations can be found in the book Soccernomics in a segment entitled “Why England Loses.” (This is well worth a read for any English football fan; essentially, you overvalue your football heritage and undervalue the benefits of innovation.) And many more explanations, some of them echoing the arguments in Soccernomics, have been trotted out in the English newspapers today.

The English Premiere League doesn’t employ enough English players, thereby allowing too many foreigners to gain high-level experience at the expense of native lads.
The English players in the EPL are too exhausted after the long season (although foreign EPL players are apparently exempt from such exhaustion).
English technique is simply inferior to other squads’, whether the Germans’ hyper-organization or the South Americans’ run-and-gun; but, having invented the game, England still thinks its technique is supreme.
English fans and media expect too much and thereby create too much pressure. (That might explain why Wayne Rooney and all the rest seemed scared to even take a shot in the Algeria draw.)
Because “our best players are just not as good as everyone says, and the rest of the team are just average.”
England is snakebit, and had typically poor pre-tourney luck, with injuries to Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King, and even David Beckham.
Here’s my favorite explanation, from London’s outspoken mayor Boris Johnson, writing in today’s Telegraph:

I had an insight, an omen, yesterday morning. I got up early to play tennis, at a municipal court. It is a lovely place, an oasis of green, in a densely populated area not far from London; and since I had failed to book I fully expected to be kicked off by 8am. Well, by 9am the courts were still deserted and we played blissfully on. It wasn’t until almost 10am – on one of the most glorious days of the year, a day when the whole of nature seems to shout that it’s time for tennis – that we were joined on the courts. A nice middle-aged couple turned up and began patting it to each other, and I thought, by heaven, what is wrong with us? Where is the get-up-and-go of our kids?

If this was Germany, they would have been out bagging the courts since dawn! Somewhere along the line the nation that invented or codified virtually every sport seems to have lost its lust for competitive games. I don’t want to exaggerate this. We did amazingly at the 2008 Olympics, and we have recently beaten Australia at rugby. But in our game, the world game, we should be doing so much better.

I am sure the problem is partly to do with all those foreign players in the Premiership, but it’s more fundamental than that. We are still paying the price of an educational establishment that developed an aversion to competitive games and an obsession with bureaucracy and elf and safety that made it hard for the voluntary sector to fill the gap.
I am sure you could find (or come up with) at least 100 more explanations for England’s regular World Cup failure.

World Cup 2010 Group A: France vs. South Africa, Mexico vs. Uruguay

The French Revolution: France lost 2-0 to Mexico. The only thing less impressive than the result was the manner in which it was earned. The French were impotence personified. They played as 11 individuals. They could not break down the opponent. We thought we had reached the nadir, the fitting capstone to Raymond Domenech’s tenure. We thought wrong.
Nicolas Anelka told Domenech “Go Fuck Yourself, You Son of a Bitch” and was taken off at halftime. The story was leaked to the media. The F.F.F. (French Football Federation) held a meeting and dismissed the Chelsea striker from the team.
Players did not agree with the decision. They refused to train the next day to protest. This led to a theatrical altercation between captain Patrice Evra and a French coach, on YouTube within minutes. The team returned to their bus for a closed-window meeting. They forced Raymond Domenech, once a players strike leader (and mustache cultivator) himself , to a read a statement to the media stating their support for Anelka, their disagreement over how the situation was handled and their anger at F.F.F.
The French players did train yesterday, though the story has erupted into a national scandal.Sponsors are pulling out. Senior government officials are involving themselves. France’s reputation is at stake. So, the white French establishment using this as an opportunity to pontificate and humble “imbeclic” and “spoiled” players – mostly black with a few, including Anelka, who are Muslim – for not being properly French. That should go over well in the banlieues.
France vs. South Africa: For the match itself, Domenech will be shorthanded. His normal inclination is to play two holding midfielders. With Jeremy Toulalan suspended for two yellow cards, he won’t have any. Domenech dropped the “ringleaders” of the training ground sit down – captain Patrice Evra, former captain Thierry Henry, William Gallas, and Eric Abidal – from the Starting XI. (It’s just a theory, but these aren’t rubes. They are all veteran players, guys who have won Champions Leagues and domestic titles. The media should consider the possibility we did not get the whole story, rather than repeat the exclamations of one side and revel in the schadenfreude because it confirms anti-French prejudices.)
Both France and South Africa can advance, but they need an emphatic win and some help.  Either Uruguay or Mexico needs to win to leave one team on four points. Depending on which team, France would have to make up a four or five goal difference. For South Africa it is five goals or six. Essentially, they need a turnaround on the level of the U.S. beating Egypt 3-0 and Italy losing 3-0 to send them through.
It’s hard to see France scoring. They have been scoreless for three straight. They haven’t scored against World Cup caliber opposition since a qualifying match with Serbia in September. South Africa’s skill players should have room to operate. Though he resembles him in stature, Abou Diaby is no Patrick Vieira. The fans should propel South Africa to a modest win, but not enough to go through.
Uruguay vs. Mexico: A draw sends both teams to the knockout round. Uruguay has shown versatility. The Sky Blue sat back and shut off France in the first match. They attacked with three strikers and thrashed South Africa in the second. With the advantage on goal difference, I think they opt to defend. Mexico will miss Carlos Vela’s speed down the wing, he’s out with a hamstring problem.
Nothing will be preordained. Trying to avoid Argentina, Mexico will shoot for an early goal.  Why else start Blanco up front? Uruguay will hope for inspiration from Diego Forlan. However, if the teams are tied in the second half, expect them to count their blessings and kick the ball around for twenty minutes.

Nigeria to Topple Greece

Scoring its first World Cup goal may not be much of a consolation if Greece suffers another early tournament exit. Nigeria is also trying to avoid an untimely elimination in South Africa.
The winless Group B rivals meet for the first time at the World Cup in 16 years Thursday in Bloemfontein.
Known for its disciplined defensive play, Greece committed a costly error that led to a goal in the 7th minute of a 2-0 loss to South Korea in the World Cup opener for both teams Saturday.
The defeat left the Greeks scrambling for answers as they managed two shots on goal.
“We really have to get our act together,” said coach Otto Rehhagel, who guided Greece to a surprise title at the 2004 European Championship by implementing stringent defensive play and organization. “We’ve got to improve a couple of things and be brave and courageous enough.”
While defensive struggles were evident Saturday, Greece hasn’t managed a goal in four World Cup games. The team was outscored 10-0 while losing every match in 1994, falling 2-0 to Nigeria.
Another scoreless effort against the Super Eagles could mean elimination from this tournament after Greece managed one goal while going 0-3 at Euro 2008.
“To be honest, there can be no transformation in five days, not for any team,” defender Vasilis Torosidis said. “What we need to be is very stubborn and to show this on the pitch. Even if we don’t win, we won’t be disappointed as long as we play well.”
Captain Giorgos Karagounis is one player Greece needs to play well, especially offensively. The midfielder, who was part of the 2004 title-winning team, was removed at halftime Saturday due to ineffectiveness.
Greece, though, could get a boost with the expected return of 6-foot-5 central defender Vangelis Moras, who missed the opener with a nagging groin injury.
Nigeria is facing elimination at the group stage for a second consecutive World Cup appearance after going 0-2-1 in 2002.
The Super Eagles fell 1-0 to Argentina on Saturday, as Vincent Enyeama kept the game from getting out of hand by making six saves to earn man of the match honors.
“We’re not going to kill ourselves. We have two more games to play,” Enyeama said. “We thank God the score was a little encouraging.”
Nigeria, though, will need to generate more offense after getting one shot on goal against Argentina.
Obafemi Martins, who had the lone shot, could be in the lineup after being used as a reserve. The forward has 17 goals in 32 games for his homeland, including a clutch tally with 9 minutes left to secure a 3-2 win over Kenya in the final World Cup qualifier to earn Nigeria a trip to South Africa.
A loss by either team would mean certain elimination. However, a tie would keep both alive heading into the final matches Tuesday, when Nigeria faces South Korea and Greece meets Argentina.

Switzerland wins? US vs Slovenia preview

It is 2:31am in South Africa and jet lag is the most understated word that comes to mind right now. World Cup ads are everywhere. Salesmen walk in the middle of streets between cars, hawking jerseys for the World Cup teams. Vuvuzelas - the yard-long horns that are blown in South African soccer stadiums - are everywhere...and annoying.

Can someone please verify that Spain really lost? Goes to show you how much passion goes into each of these games. How many (honest) people out there would have even given the Swiss a chance? Good work Switzerland, you just gave hope to Slovenia and every other underdog the rest of the tournament.

Speaking of the USA next match, Slovenia enters the Friday's match-up against the USA as the top-dog in Group C. Slovenia was able to beat their opening opponent Algeria 1-0 because of a costly mistake by the Algerian goalkeeper (not as embarrassing as England goalie Robert Green's blunder).

The US was able to squeak a draw against the Brits, but will need to play better if they are to get out of the group stage. This game has huge implications for both sides:
  1. A win for Slovenia guarantees them a trip to the knockout round.
  2. America needs a win to keep pace with England, who will likely get the three points against Algeria.

Slovenia’s strength is their defense. During World Cup qualifying, Slovenia only allowed four goals in ten matches.Slovenia’s roster is composed manly by a bunch of no-names who play very well as a team.
Their captain Robert Koren said it best when he told FIFA.com: “We don’t have any big-name players, but we do have a great spirit in the team and I think that will be our biggest strength…off the field we are all good friends, and I think you see that on the field, too.”
As will be the case in every opponent the US has upcoming, this one is most important. As Spain saw first hand today (yesterday...whenever that was) you have to treat each opponent in this World Cup as the best, or they will make you look your worst.

Celtics Win Game 6 and collect their 18th Championship...

Gameday Consultants has the Celtics tonight taking advantage of the 6.5 points they are being given. We have yet  to see the Big 3 play their best together and that's fine. Tonight however, we are going to need a full team effort. This is the game where the Celtics or any team in sports cannot take their foot off the throat of their opponent.

Celtics are entering game 6 with a 2 game win streak and heavy momentum, should they lose tonight, the momentum now is in the hands of the Lakers, at home with Kobe in a do or die. Nobody wants that.

Tonight Sacramento fans can come out to Clubhouse 56 (723 56th Street
Sacramento, CA 95819 (916) 454-5656) and see what should be the best game of the series so far.

I would love to be in LA right now cheering on the Celtics but I have an early flight to Johannesburg for the USA World Cup Game against Slovenia.

Take care and remember Celtics +6.5 tonight at 9.

USA beats England: World Cup 2010

To most people in the United States, the World Cup is just another sporting event: one more reason to fire up the grill, crack open a beer and invite some friends over. And that’s if you’re young or interested enough even to understand the game, let alone appreciate it — or maybe a really dedicated soccer mom.
“Football” as the rest of the world knows it is far more than a game, and the World Cup through international lenses is far more than a sporting event. It’s a monthlong peace treaty for nations to come together and play the world’s most beloved game. With everyone on an equal playing field, it’s about hope, opportunity and patriotism.
For 90 minutes, people who differ in race, religion or gender leave all of those issues — issues they may even fight wars over — outside the stadium walls. They come together as fans, chanting and singing as 11 men wearing their nation’s colors unite to earn the right to call themselves the best in the world. That’s what I love the most about the World Cup: It’s amazing how soccer can bring the world together.
Of course I root for the home team and hope the United States does well, but I think I have more loyalty to certain players than to any nation outside of the U.S. I don’t feel any particular loyalty to Portugal, but I love to watch Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays club ball for Real Madrid when he’s not playing with the Portuguese national team.
Confusing? If you’re not sure who to watch but want to see some good soccer during the next month, here are five non-U.S. players worth watching:
1. Lionel Messi, Argentina. (World Player of the Year in 2009; arguably the best player in the world since Diego Maradona)
2. Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal. (Scoring goals is an art form for this guy. He’s explosive, crafty, and without a doubt one of the best players in the world.)
3. Wayne Rooney, England. (Solid finisher, likes to play off of the long ball. Rooney plays very direct, fast soccer.)
4. Kaká, Brazil. (His real name is Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite — now you know why he goes by just his nickname, the only name the world of soccer knows him by. With Kaká in the midfield, Brazil is dangerous in the counter attack.)
5. Iker Casillas, Spain. (Goalkeeper; he has a tendency to make forwards look foolish. Seriously, he does things only superheroes are supposed to be able to do.)
And here in the land of the free, we’ve got one of the strongest teams the United States has ever had. Five players that may help lead the U.S. to success:
1. Tim Howard. (The veteran’s goalkeeping experience will keep the Yanks in close games.)
2. Carlos Bocanegra. (Plain and simple, this guy plays solid defense.)
3. Landon Donovan. (Over the years Donovan has become America’s golden boy. The outside midfielder makes things happen in the attack for the U.S.)
4. Clint Dempsey. (Donovan’s outside midfield counterpart; scored against Spain to win a huge upset for the U.S. in the Confederations Cup this year.)
5. Jozy Altidore. (A young, energetic forward. I’m not sure which I enjoy more — watching him score goals or watching his very American post-goal celebration: the “stanky leg.”)
After upsetting top-ranked Spain this year in the Confederations Cup, the Red-White-and-Blue has momentum and a chance to do very well in South Africa. So have some pride in your country, and if Jozy Altidore scores, I hope you’ve practiced your stanky leg.
One game you absolutely don’t want to miss: United States vs. England.

Lakers/Celtics

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the average resale price for a ticket to Game 1 of the 2010 NBA finals is $1,071. That is 52% higher than the price a Game 1 ticket was going for had the series started in Phoenix.
The Journal also noted that average ticket price in Boston has increased from $561 to $591 since the Lakers eliminated the Suns on Saturday night.
Starting on Thursday, the Celtics and Lakers will meet for the 12th time in an NBA finals series. How remarkable is that? Consider this: Since the Celtics and Lakers first met in the NBA finals in 1959 (a four-game sweep for the Celtics,) the most common World Series matchup has been the Yankees and Dodgers, who have met four times. In the NHL? Maple Leafs and Canadiens, with three matchups. And for the Super Bowl it’s the Cowboys and Steelers, also with three.
Since 1959 the Celtics and Lakers have played in the NBA finals more times than the most common championship opponents in the other three major sports combined. Not that there was a whole lot of doubt, but this pretty much confirms that we are talking about the dominant rivalry in North American professional sports, right?
Get ready for double digit ratings....oh and the Celtics in 7.

Celtics/Magic Game 3

Line/total: We opened Celtics -3 and so far have booked mostly Boston money. Nearly 75 percent of the action on the Celtics, so we’ve gone to 3.5 on the game.
I suspect we’ll be going to 4 at some point today. I believe we’ll see sharp money on the dog once we go to 4.
We opened the total at 190 and haven’t moved off our opening number. We’ve booked more money on the under, but I’m sure we will see money come in on the over as we get closer to game time.
Series price: Celtics -500
Comments: This is a must-win game for the Magic. They’re trailing this series 2-0 and have lost both games on their home court.
The Magic have been very good on the road so far in the playoffs, going 4-0 SU and ATS. This season on the road, the Magic went 29-16 SU and 25-17 ATS.
No question, the Magic believe they can win this game and get back in this series. The Magic have already won twice this year in Boston and last year in the playoffs the Magic won two of four games on Boston’s home court, including a series clinching game 7.
I’m not trying to make a case for the Magic, but I’m fairly certain this team is not going to lay down and just give this game or this series to the Celtics. With that said, the Celtics are a perfect 5-0 SU and ATS since they got blown out by the Cavs in Game 3 of their series vs Cleveland.
